We haven’t seen too many tabletop games on PSVR. And it hasn’t really been proven to work really well on PSVR either, but not too long ago Tin Man Games announced Table Of Tales for the PSVR. Which is a table top strategy game! So, Is Table Of Tales any good?
Table Of Tales is a table top strategy game that has you controlling a team of characters to fight enemies. The story of the game is about heroes of the seas getting framed. It’s a basic story, but it does enough to help keep you playing.
You start off the game with a note and key inside of your attic. And after using the key the table transforms into a game, and a talking bird named Arbitirx guides you on your journey. The bird reads all of the dialogue as if it was a story book. The voice acting isn’t bad, but sometimes it can get annoying due to repeating lines.
The game mostly consists of combat, but there is the occasional interaction with the environment and NPCs.
We’re going to be focusing on the combat though. When you start a battle each of your characters have a health and armor bar, which is displayed on their piece. There are also little gems displayed on the piece. These gems are the characters turns, once they run out of turns they cannot do anything in the game. Turns are used up by moving or by using cards. Cards are what you use to interact, attack, and other moves. To use a card you just have to drag it onto the selected character. Each character has unique cards and abilities, and they can unlock more cards by leveling up. After all of your teams turns are used, the enemy gets a turn. And it just goes back and forward until one team wins.
The combat is good, but didn’t really do anything to innovate. That’s not really a problem, but it just doesn’t stand out much when it comes to turn based combat.
Now when it comes to interaction during combat, sometimes you’ll need to interact with the environment or an NPC to win the fight. To do this you have to walk up to the area and roll the dice. You’re rolling for stars, if you get enough stars you’ll complete the task. If not you’ll have to re-roll. Rolling the dice does take up your turns though.
One of the most unique parts of the game is the board itself. The environments really come to life on the board, and sometimes I forgot that I was in some old attic. The animations and detail really help with that. It’s really impressive!
So Overall, Table Of Tales is a good game. It’s got solid combat, graphics, and controls. And it even has a local multiplayer gamemode. But it would have been really nice if they went the extra mile and added online multiplayer. I don’t really have any problems with the game, but it’s just not a must have title. If you’re into these type of games or are looking for something new to play, this is a solid choice. But otherwise I would wait for a sale.
