One of the most anticipated VR games for almost every player is No Man’s Sky VR. Ever since it was announced at Sony’s state of play event, people were beyond excited. And now that the update is out, is it any good?
No Man’s Sky VR is part of an update to No Man’s Sky called No Man’s Sky Beyond. This update is completely free if you own the game, so don’t worry about having to buy anything else. If you don’t know already, No Man’s Sky is a survival game that has you traveling between thousands of randomly generated planets. No two players will have the same experience playing the game. You’ll start off stranded on a planet, with part of your ship destroyed. You’ll learn the basics of the game and eventually repair your ship and get off the planet. The core mechanics of the game have you mining ores and crafting technology, tool upgrades, building pieces, fuel for your ship, and health upgrades. It might seem very complicated at the start of the game, but the in-game tutorials do a great job at walking you through everything.
Another major part of the game is flying around. Sometimes it could take up to 4 weeks to make it to a faraway planet, and when I say 4 weeks I don’t mean in-game time. Luckily there is a hyperdrive button that lets you get there at an extremely fast speed. But that takes up fuel fast, so you’ll need to refill it often. If you run out of fuel in the middle of space, luckily you can destroy asteroids to find ores, and some ores can recharge your ship’s fuel. It’s a great system that keeps the survival aspect going, even when you’re not on a planet.
Flying in space is epic, but does take a little while to get used to the controls. But the controls outside of the cockpit work extremely well, and honestly feels like it was meant to be inside of VR from the beginning.
Another major aspect of the game is the multiplayer. There is the occasional glitch when playing with others, which typically ends with having to restart the game, but when it works it works really well. It really is awesome to play a huge survival game like this with multiplayer.
The only downgrade the PSVR version has is the graphics, the game looks pretty blurry and there’s a lot of pop in. The PS4 and PS4 Pro versions look the exact same, so there currently isn’t a pro patch. That’s pretty much my only complaint with the game though, and I honestly forgot about the graphics after getting into the gameplay.
So overall, No Man’s Sky is a must have! It’s everything I wanted and more, it brought the full No Man’s Sky experience into VR perfectly. And so now we have a PSVR game that is pretty much endlessly replay-able. I don’t see myself getting bored of this game anytime soon, and I know I’ll be coming back to this game for years to come. If you own a PSVR, or PCVR headset, please do yourself a favor and pick this game up!
