A surprise release this week for PSVR was a game called Slum Ball, I hadn’t heard of the game before, but I was interested to see what it was all about. So now that the game is out, is it any good?
Slum Ball is a PSVR mini-game compilation that has you playing through various different levels with no real goal. It’s pretty much just a game where you play each mini-game without having to worry about a score, or unlocking the next level.
These levels consist of very simple mini-games. Most of which are different variations of Breakout but in 3D. You’ll be hitting an object back and forward trying to destroy all objects, some of the variations include hitting a rat, hitting moving objects, or trying to hit objects with walls in the way. Some of these mini-games were fun for a few minutes, but I don’t think I’ll be coming back to play them anymore.
I do have a few issues with the basic breakout games though, I thought that the objects were too sensitive to your hits. If you put a decent amount of effort into your swing, it’ll make the object go flying way too fast, to the point where it will be almost impossible to hit in time. So I had to do light taps with my hands to play the game. And my other problem is more of a warning, if you don’t have a big play space for your PSVR, don’t play this game! You need a good amount of space to be able to hit all the objects.
As for the music and environments, they are decent. There isn’t a large amount of detail, but I wouldn’t expect that from a game like this. And some of the music is good, but others are ok. It’s a lot of random music taken from the internet, so don’t expect anything amazing.
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have any fun with the game, but my problem is just that this doesn’t feel like a complete game. It’s a bunch of mini-games that only lasted for a few minutes. Some of them are fun, but not fun or deep enough for me to spend more than 5 minutes with.
So Overall, Slum Ball is ok. I enjoyed some of the mini-games, but nothing here feels new or unique. I don’t think it’s a bad game, but I don’t think it’s a good one either. It’s current price is $15 or £18, so I would recommend that you wait for a deep sale on this one if you have any interest in it.
