One of the challenges with moving to a new generation of gaming is re-implementing the previous generation’s technology. Some companies do it well, while others seem to ignore previous hardware completely! When it comes to PlayStation VR, things can get confusing. You’re using motion controllers from the PlayStation 3, a camera from the PlayStation 4, and a Virtual Reality headset that works on both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, so things can get confusing. Luckily the Move controllers and PSVR headset both work on the PlayStation 5 just as easily as they did on the PlayStation 4, but one of the biggest questions many users have is: “How can I use my PlayStation Camera on the PS5?” Unlike the PSVR headset and controllers that are used with it, the PlayStation Camera isn’t simply a plug-and-play device on PS5. So in this article, I will be explaining how to use the PlayStation Camera on PS5, as well as what you need to get it working!
What’s needed to use The PlayStation Camera on PS5:
Instead of the PlayStation Camera simply using a type of USB connection, like most other devices, it requires a unique port only found on the PS4 family of systems. So the reason you can’t simply plug it in is that Sony held off from including this port on the PS5. Whether that be for saving costs, or the amount of power being used is unknown to us, but luckily Sony was prepared for this situation, as they released a PlayStation Camera adapter so that you can use it on the PS5 console. This is a simple adapter transferring the PlayStation Camera cable to a USB connection, in which there are 4 ports on the PS5 console. In this next section, I’ll explain how you can acquire this adapter, and what you need to be aware of before getting one.
How to get the PS5 PSVR Camera Adapter:
There are two options when it comes to acquiring the PS5 PSVR Camera Adapter. The first option is to fill out a form directly from Sony, requesting an adaptor for your console. While the second option is to purchase a third-party adapter from a site such as Amazon. Let’s first discuss the first option, requesting an adapter from Sony.
Sony’s Form
Requesting an adaptor from Sony was the easiest and first option available before the PS5 launched. To request an adaptor all you need is to enter your PSVR serial number (on the breakout box), then fill out some basic information such as your shipping address, email, and phone number. But there are a few possible issues…
While the adaptor is completely free, and easy to apply for, there are a few potential issues with using this method. The first is that you’ll have to wait at the very least a week or two for your adapter to arrive. While this might not be an issue to many, I want people to be aware of this as at the time of writing this it’s getting into the holiday season. But the main issue that I’ve heard many times lately is that people aren’t getting their adapters in general. Things appear to be very inconsistent with these adaptors, from one person I’ll hear they easily applied and got their adaptor shortly after, while with others I’ve heard it has taken months to get theirs, if at all! Search on the PSVR subreddit and you’ll see this isn’t an isolated incident, it seems that more and more users aren’t getting their adapters.
So while this seems to be an increasing issue as time passes after the PS5’s launch, there is one more option for getting your PlayStation Camera setup on PS5.
Third-Party Adapter
If you’re in a rush or haven’t had any luck with Sony’s form, consider buying a third-party adapter like the one below:
If the Sony Form hasn’t worked out for you, your best bet is to purchase a third-party adapter (unofficial). After searching around, I quickly found an adapter on Amazon that has over 129 ratings, with 79% of those ratings being 5-stars. While I haven’t tried this adapter myself, this seems to be the solution most people are going with as it becomes increasingly difficult to get one from Sony. The obvious downside to this, of course, is that it’s going to cost you money. But I would still highly recommend trying this option out, as when using a website such as Amazon, you can easily return the item if it doesn’t meet your needs.
