A company that has been massively supporting Virtual Reality is Ubisoft. They’ve put out Star Trek, Transference, Eagle Flight, and a few more games. So when their latest VR title, Space Junkies, was announced I was very excited. And recently I got to play the open beta and I had a blast with it. I found myself spending hours at a time playing round upon round while hanging out with friends. But now the full game is out, and is it any good?
Space Junkies is a first person online shooter that puts you into space while you fight against random players or your friends. This game is online focused, so you’re not gonna find any single player content.
The game can be played with up to 4 players. There are a few different game modes you can play. You can play Team Deathmatch, Free for All, and king mode. And if you don’t have a full game you can only play free for all or 1 v 1’s if there are two players in the game.
There are a few different ways to join the game. You can start up a private match so that you can invite up to 3 other friends. Then there is team up where you can invite 1 friend to team up and battle 2 random players. And finally there is quickplay where you can search for a game to join.
Now let’s talk about the actual gameplay, it’s all about getting the right weapons to survive the battle. There are 7 different weapons spread throughout the maps. Some of the weapons are shotguns, machine guns, slingshots, pistols, rocket launchers, and more. You can holster two weapons at once, some weapons can be dual wielded and some require both hands.
Each player has a health bar and another bar for armor. Health and armor are also spread throughout each map.
You also have side weapons that can be changed through the armory. Which is a place where you can customize your character and profile. Some of the side weapons are a sword, shield, a health pack, an EMP, and more!
Speaking of the armory, you have a player profile picture and banner which can be changed in the armory. You can also change your character in the armory. Each character has unique stats, some characters are faster, and some have more stamina.
One final point I want to touch on is the controls. I don’t normally talk about controls, but there has been a lot of mixed feelings about the controls for this game. The game only uses the Dual Shock, there is no move support at the time of making this video. I personally love the controls in this game, but I could see how some people are disappointed with it. I just personally don’t think move controllers would work well with this game.
So overall, I really enjoyed Space Junkies. It’s a great multiplayer game that’s fast paced, has good controls, and fun weapons. My only concern is that there will be a lack of players playing online, so if you plan on picking this up make sure you have friends to play with. If you’re really into online shooters, I think you’ll like it. But you might want to wait for a sale as it’s a little too expensive in my opinion.
